PREP SOFTBALL: Garmon’s late home run helps Good Hope knock off Hanceville 11-7

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville Lady Bulldogs went 5-1 last week and looked to continue their momentum into their county matchup against the Good Hope Lady Raiders on Wednesday afternoon. Hanceville held a 7-4 lead after three innings, but the final three innings belonged to the Good Hope Lady Raiders, as who scored the final seven runs of the game to win 11-7.

Good Hope struck first in their opening at-bats. Kylee Smith got hit by a pitch with one out, then Campbell Koch drew a walk to put runners on first and second. One out later, Carlee Trammell and Kynzlee Garmon hit back-to-back RBI singles to give the Lady Raiders an early 2-0 lead. Hanceville, though, countered in their half. Makayla Butler led things off with a double, then Bentley Childers’ bunt single drove in Butler to cut it to 2-1. During the bunt single, an error allowed Childers to move up to second. One out later, Isabella Spinks hit an RBI single to right field to tie it up at two.

Bella White drew a one-out walk in the top of the second. One out and two pitches later, White stole second, and Smith drove her in on an RBI single. Smith moved up to second on the throw-in, and Koch followed that up with an RBI single of her own to make it 4-2. The Lady Bulldogs cooked up a late rally of their own in their half. Butler drew a two-out walk, then Childers hit a single to left field. Kynzlee Farr’s two-run double to right field tied it up once again at four.

Hanceville broke the tie in the bottom of the third. Spinks led off the inning with a double to center field, then Karrigan Pipkin hit a single and moved up to second on the throw-in. Peyton Mariano’s RBI bunt single drove in Spinks, then during the play, a throwing error allowed Pipkin to score as well, as that gave the Lady Bulldogs a 6-4 lead. Laila Lewis kept the big inning going for Hanceville with an RBI single to widen their lead to 7-4.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Good Hope looked to cut into the Hanceville lead in the top of the fifth. Trammell led off the inning with a single, then Garmon got hit by the pitch to put runners on first and second. A passed ball moved them up to second and third, then one out later, a bunt single brought home Trammell to cut it to 7-5. Smith hit a one-out single in the top of the sixth, then she stole second. A dropped fly ball by Hanceville allowed Smith to score to make it a one-run game. Molly Benefield’s ground ball moved Koch over to second, then a hit by pitch put runners at first and second with two out. Garmon delivered one of the biggest hits of the game, as she hit a three-run home run over the left center field to give the Lady Raiders a 9-7 lead. 

Good Hope loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. Benefield got hit by the pitch to force home a run, then Trammell drove in a run on a ground ball to make it 11-7. Benefield set the Lady Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the seventh to help seal the 11-7 win for the Lady Raiders.

Garmon finished with two hits, highlighted by the three-run homer, and four RBIs for Good Hope. Trammell added two hits and a pair of RBIs. Smith and Koch each collected a pair of hits and an RBI, while Benefield drove in a run of her own in the win. For Hanceville, Farr finished with a pair of hits and two RBIs. Childers collected three hits and an RBI. Spink ended up with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Mariano and Lewis each finished with a hit and an RBI in the loss.

The Lady Raiders’ road trip will continue next Monday, as take on West Morgan in an area game. The Lady Bulldogs will host Locust Fork on Thursday afternoon.Â
