FAIRVIEW, Ala. – The Fairview Town Council at its Monday, March 2, meeting began with attendees praying for Former Mayor Randall Shedd as he prepares for a medical procedure this week.
During updates on ongoing projects, the council reported improvements at the town ballpark are nearing completion. New lights and a backstop have been installed at the fields, and renovations to the park bathrooms are almost finished. The bathrooms now feature new flooring, ceilings and lighting, with toilets scheduled to be installed soon. Temporary portable restrooms have been ordered.
Work has also begun on the town’s new pickleball courts, though the council said recent rain slowed initial dirt work. A newly constructed maintenance building at the park is now operational, and council members approved moving forward with additional work to enclose the building with a budget of up to $15,000. Officials said some of the cost will be offset by the sale of unused Conex storage containers.
The council also approved purchasing new basketball goal poles for the town’s court and discussed improvements to softball batting areas, including new netting estimated to cost between $1,000 and $2,500.
Participation in the town’s youth baseball program has reached 223 players this season, the highest total in recent years, according to town officials. The town recently hosted CPR certification training for coaches and volunteers, certifying 16 participants. Council members also discussed community partnerships, including a donation of 30 Chick-fil-A gift cards to reward young athletes for sportsmanship during the season.
In other business, the council voted to surplus an unused town pickup truck and, if repairs prove unsuccessful, potentially an ATV. Funds from those sales would return to the town’s maintenance budget.
Future projects were discussed including acquiring automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for sports fields, planning for potential soccer field development, relocating the town playground to higher ground and creating a .gov website for the town.
The council also reviewed installing additional speed limit signs within town limits and discussed a potential community cleanup effort for a rundown property along Alabama Highway 69. Officials said they will review legal considerations before determining whether town resources can be used to assist with the cleanup.
The council approved payment of the town’s bills before adjourning.
The next meeting of the Fairview Town Council will be Monday, April 6, at 6 p.m. at Fairview Town Hall.
