CULLMAN, Ala. – James Michael Doss, 67, of Cullman County, has been transferred to state prison to serve a 325-year sentence imposed after he pleaded guilty to 12 child sex crime charges, Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker announced.
Doss was transported Thursday, Aug. 13, to Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery County. An Alabama Department of Corrections record accompanying Crocker’s announcement lists Doss at Kilby under Alabama Institutional Serial No. 00345372 and reflects a total prison term of 325 years.
“This is the final chapter in a long fight to hold Doss accountable for his unspeakable crimes,” Crocker said.
Crocker thanked those who participated in the prosecution, giving particular recognition to the victims who came forward and continued pursuing justice throughout the case.
Doss pleaded guilty Feb. 13 to two counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12, one count of production of child pornography and seven counts of possession of child pornography.
Doss entered what is known as a blind plea, meaning he pleaded guilty without an agreement with prosecutors establishing his sentence. The case had been scheduled for trial March 9.
Cullman County Circuit Court Judge Emily Niezer Johnston sentenced Doss on April 8 to a combined 325 years in prison. The sentences were ordered to be served consecutively.
Following the sentencing, Crocker said Doss showed no remorse. Crocker credited the victims with helping prosecutors secure a result that would prevent him from reoffending.
Crocker also praised the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office and members of the district attorney’s office for their work on the case.
The investigation began in 2020 after multiple victims came forward. Doss, then a 61-year-old Bremen resident, was initially arrested on two counts of sexual abuse of a child younger than 12, two counts of first-degree sodomy and one count of producing obscene material depicting a child younger than 17.
The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that investigators determined the abuse occurred over a period of many years.
The case later expanded to include the seven possession charges that were among the 12 counts to which Doss pleaded guilty.
Sheriff Matt Gentry said investigators moved quickly after the victims came forward, following leads that ultimately resulted in Doss’ arrest.
