CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) said residents should be prepared for dangerously cold weather this weekend. EMA Director Tim Sartin said a significant drop in temperatures is expected across the region beginning Saturday night and continuing through Monday morning.

“Forecasts indicate that temperatures will remain below freezing for an extended period, with wind chills plunging into the single digits on Sunday and Monday mornings,” Sartin said. “These conditions pose serious risks to health, infrastructure and animals, so it’s important to take proactive steps now to stay safe and minimize disruptions.”

Sartin said for this weekend and other weather weekends like it, safety is first, and protecting yourself and your loved ones is the priority.

“Limit your time outdoors during this cold snap, especially during early morning hours when wind chills are at their lowest,” he said. “Dress in layers to retain body heat, and ensure that vulnerable individuals — such as newborns, the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, outdoor workers and individuals experiencing homelessness — have access to warm shelter and appropriate clothing. Everyone is at risk during extreme cold, but these groups are particularly susceptible to cold-related health issues.”

Prevention and preparedness in your home is key during cold weather conditions, Sartin added.

“To reduce the risk of power outages, prepare backup heating options and ensure flashlights and batteries are readily available,” he said. “Insulate exposed pipes, open cabinet doors to allow warm air to circulate around the plumbing and disconnect outdoor hoses and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. If you use space heaters, keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.”

Sartin reminded community members not to forgot outdoor companions, and to monitor the weather.

“Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible during this cold spell,” Sartin said. “Make sure they have access to warm, dry shelter and that their food and water sources are not frozen. For outdoor plants, cover them with breathable materials to help retain warmth and protect them from frost damage. Knowing the temperature thresholds of your plants can help you decide which ones need extra protection. Monitor local weather updates and advisories throughout the weekend. Taking these precautions now can help prevent emergencies and ensure the safety of your household and community. If you have neighbors who may need assistance, especially the elderly or those with limited mobility, consider checking in on them to ensure they are prepared.”

Sartin said the Cullman County EMA will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and provide timely updates.

“Information will be shared across our official social media channels, through our mobile app and via Everbridge alerts,” he said. “If you haven’t already downloaded our app, it is available for free on both iOS and Android platforms. We encourage all residents to install it to stay informed and receive critical notifications directly to their devices.”
