PREP BASKETBALL: Lady Warriors, Eagles collect county wins

BREMEN, Ala. – The West Point Warriors and Lady Warriors made the trip to Bremen to take on the Cold Springs Eagles on Friday night, and the schools split the series. In the varsity girls’ game, West Point held a slim lead at the half, but they broke the game wide open in the second half, as they ended up defeating Cold Springs, 68-43. In the varsity boys’ game, the Warriors held the lead going into the locker room, but the Eagles went on a huge run to end the third quarter, and they would go on to knock off West Point 58-43.

West Point 68 – Cold Springs 43 (Varsity Girls)

Kealie Harbison and Camryn Faulkner each hit a three early in the game for West Point, helping them jump out to a 6-2 lead. A rebound and putback by Camryn Faulkner, and baskets in the paint by Jaelyn Faulkner and Caitlee Simmons quickly stretched their lead to 12-2. Kaydance Williams and Kotie Calvert of Cold Springs each hit a basket down low to cut the lead to 12-6 late in the opening period. Laklin Shadix hit a pair from the line, and Simmons added a layup to give the Lady Warriors a 16-6 lead going into the second period.

The Lady Eagles cut into the lead to start out the second quarter. Hollyn Bruer knocked down a pair of free throws, Ella Dickerson laid it up and in, Bruer hit another free throw, and Calvert put in a basket in the paint to make it a 16-13 game. Camryn Faulkner scored through a foul and completed the three-point play at the free throw line, then nailed a three from the right corner to quickly put West Point ahead 22-13. Free throws by Dickerson and a basket down low by Williams made it a 24-17 game, but Camryn Faulkner drained her third trey of the first half to give the Lady Warriors a 27-17 lead. Baskets by Macie Huffstutler and Williams cut it to 27-21, but a late layup by Shadix gave West Point a 29-21 lead at the half.

Harbison buried a three from the right wing to increase the Lady Warriors’ lead to 32-21. A driving layup by Bruer made it a 34-24 game, but Harbison knocked down her third triple of the game to give West Point a 37-24 lead. Camryn Faulkner and Harbison each added baskets down low to widen their lead to 41-24. Dickerson stopped the bleeding with a basket on the other end, but baskets by Simmons and Camryn Faulkner, followed by a pair of free throws by Shadix, put the Lady Warriors ahead, 47-26, late in the third. Camryn Faulkner drained another long-range shot to make it a 50-28 game, and the Lady Warriors would take a 50-31 lead into the final period.

A rebound and putback by Dickerson cut it to 50-33 early in the fourth, but Camryn Faulkner and Patton Fell each buried a three to give West Point a 56-35 lead. Harbison hit a pair of baskets down low, and Fell knocked down another three to make it a 63-37 game. The Lady Warriors ended up defeating the Lady Eagles, 68-43, as they have now won 10 straight games.

Camryn Faulkner put up a game-high 26 points for West Point. Harbison added 15 points, while Shadix and Fell each collected eight points. For Cold Springs, Dickerson finished with 13 points, and Williams recorded 12 points.

Cold Springs 58 – West Point 43 (Varsity Boys)

West Point jumped out to a quick lead to start the game, as a Jaxon Shelton steal led to a layup by Maddox Chapman to put them on the board. Kade Vincent drained back-to-back threes to put them ahead 8-0. Cold Springs countered with a run of their own. Ethan Day scored five straight points, and Wyatt Barker hit a basket in the paint to cut it to 8-7 late in the first period. A rebound and putback by Shelton, a short jumper by Nolan Franklin, and a free throw by Chapman gave the Warriors a 13-7 lead going into the second quarter.

Lindan Hill put in a floater to cut it to 13-9 early in the second. Then, later that quarter, Ayden Black drilled a long-range shot to make it a 15-12 game. Shelton knocked down a short jumper, then Asa Sutter and Ayden Ennis each drained a pair of free throws to put West Point ahead 21-12. The Eagles cut into the lead to end the first half. Breydon Hallmon hit a pair of baskets down low, including a rebound and putback, and Barker added a layup to trim the deficit to just three at 21-18 going into the break.

Cash Dickerson buried a trey from the right corner to tie the game up at 21, then a basket in the paint by Hill gave Cold Springs a 23-21 lead. Chapman hit back-to-back baskets down low, and Shelton added a basket of his own in the paint to give the Warriors the lead right back at 27-23. The rest of the quarter, though, would belong to the Eagles, as they went on a surging 19-0 run and Hill, Dickerson and Hallmon scored all of their points during that stretch. Cold Springs would take a 42-28 lead into the final period.

Franklin hit another short jumper to cut it to 42-30 early in the fourth, then Dickerson and Chapman each traded threes to make it a 45-33 game. Hill and Black each hit a basket down low to give the Eagles a 49-33 lead. A trio of baskets by Chapman made it a 53-39 game, but Hill slammed one in to put Cold Springs ahead 55-39, and they would go on to defeat West Point 58-43.

Hill led the way for the Eagles with 15 points. Hallmon wasn’t too far behind with 14 points and Dickerson added 12 points. Chapman finished with 20 points for the Warriors, with Shelton scoring eight points.

Cold Springs will host Good Hope, and West Point will head home to take on Priceville next Tuesday night.
