CULLMAN, Ala. – A $279,267 pavement rehabilitation project is planned at Cullman Regional Airport – Folsom Field. Federal funds will cover approximately 95% of the total cost, while the local airport sponsor’s share is $6,982.
Federal Aviation Administration funds will provide $265,304. The state will contribute $6,981. The Alabama Department of Transportation identifies the City of Cullman as the airport sponsor contributing the remaining $6,982.
The project will include sealcoating and crack sealing on Parallel Taxiways A and B and the south hangar taxilanes, which provide aircraft access to the hangar area. The work will preserve existing pavement rather than construct new taxiways.
Cullman County Economic Development officials said maintaining the surfaces will help keep the airport dependable for pilots, local businesses and emergency operations.
“These types of projects are vital to protecting the pavement investment,” Cullman Regional Airport Director Ben Harrison said. “This project has been listed on our long-term capital improvement plan for a few years.”
Harrison added that continued investment ensures the airport remains safe and operational for the community.
“We are thankful for the FAA and ALDOT, along with our local city and county governments, for their continued support of the airport,” Harrison said. “This project is part of our long-term development plan, as we are always working to make this regional airport the best it can be to support our patrons and economic development.”
ALDOT announced the project Thursday, July 30, as part of its latest round of funding through the Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program.
Cullman Regional Airport was one of 11 public-use airports included in the announcement.
The program provides financial assistance and technical support for airport construction, maintenance and operational improvements.
“These grants will help local airports address important needs and maintain facilities that pilots, businesses and communities can depend on,” said Frank Farmer, bureau chief of ALDOT’s Aeronautics Bureau.
