CULLMAN, Ala. – The first round of the state playoffs is in the books, and four local teams advanced to the second round. They all have some big challenges ahead of them on Friday night. The Addison Bulldogs will host Berry Fayette in their second straight playoff game at home, the Fairview Aggies will be on the road to take on Jacksonville, the Good Hope Raiders will travel to take on West Morgan, and the Meek Tigers will host Wadley.
Addison (10-1) vs. Berry Fayette (9-2)
The Bulldogs were at home against Ragland last Thursday night in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs, and they got out to a big lead en route to a 73-39 rout of Ragland to move on to round two. Addison will stay at home this week, as they will face off against Berry Fayette, who held off Fayetteville, 44-37, in a high scoring affair. Both teams have lit up the scoreboard so far this season, with the Bulldogs averaging 51 points a game, and the Wildcats putting up just under 40 points a game. Defensively, Addison has allowed just 15 points a game, while Berry Fayette has given up 29 points a game. The Bulldogs are 5-1 on their home field, and the Wildcats are 4-1 on the road, so something will have to give when these two teams face off against each other on Friday night. Addison is 0-4 all-time against Berry Fayette, including a 54-38 loss to the Wildcats last year in the first round of the playoffs. The Bulldogs will look for their first win against Berry Fayette on Friday night with a spot in the third round on the line.
Fairview (11-0) at Jacksonville (6-5)
The Aggies hosted Arab in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs on Thursday night. It was a defensive affair from start to finish, and Fairview barely got past the Knights, 14-7, to advance to the second round for the fifth time in the last seven seasons. Now, the Aggies will go on the road to take on a Jacksonville squad that upset Ramsey on the road in the first round, 14-7, in overtime. Fairview is averaging 36 points a game on offense, and Jacksonville is currently scoring 23 a game. The Aggies have been very stingy on the defensive side of the ball, holding opponents to just 14 points a game, and the Golden Eagles have allowed 20 points a game. Fairview is 5-0 on the road, while Jacksonville is 3-3 at home, so momentum will definitely be on the Aggies’ side this week. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Aggies and the Golden Eagles, and Fairview will look to keep their undefeated season alive at Jacksonville and move on to round three.
Good Hope (9-2) at West Morgan (11-0)
It was close from start to finish in Good Hope’s first-round playoff game at home against Cherokee County last Thursday night in Class 4A, but the Raiders were able to hold off the Warriors in the end, 28-26, to clinch a spot in the second round for the fourth time in the last six years. The no. 10th-ranked Raiders will head to No. 4 West Morgan for round two. The Rebels knocked off Randolph last week, 55-21, so Good Hope will definitely be tested on Friday night. The Raiders are averaging 34 points a game offensively, and West Morgan have lit up the scoreboard on that side of the ball, scoring 42 points a game. Both teams have been stingy on the defensive side of the ball, with Good Hope allowing just 12 points a game, and the Rebels giving up just 11 points per game. The Raiders are 3-2 on the road, and West Morgan is 6-0 at home. Good Hope is 2-3 all-time against the Rebels, and their last meetings came in 2020 and 2021, which both teams split. This contest will more than likely come down to who can make the most stops in the end, and with a spot in the third round on the line, both teams will leave it all out on the field Friday night.
Meek (8-3) vs. Wadley (11-0)
The Tigers traveled to take on Woodville last Friday night in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs. A huge fourth quarter by Meek helped them get past the Panthers, 42-25, as they moved on to the second round for the second straight season. For the second straight year, the Tigers’ second-round opponent will be the same, as they will play host to no. 1 Wadley on Friday night. The Bulldogs routed South Lamar at home last week, 56-8, so Meek will definitely be tested on both sides of the ball this week. The Tigers are averaging almost 40 a points game on offense, while Wadley is scoring a little over 50 points a game on both sides of the ball. Meek is giving up 19 points a game defensively, and the Bulldogs’ defense has been stingy as well, allowing just 11 points a game. The Tigers are 4-1 at their home field, and Wadley is 3-0 on the road. Meek is 0-3 all-time against the Bulldogs, which includes a 55-22 loss to Wadley in the second round of last year’s playoffs. A spot in the third round will be on the line this Friday night, as Meek will not only look to get their first win against the Bulldogs, but also, collect one of their biggest wins of the season.
