FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Family and friends of the late Jim Boyd gathered Sunday, Nov. 2, to honor the former Cullman County Schools superintendent at the dedication of the new Jim Boyd Outdoor Classroom.

Boyd, who passed away Oct. 27, 2023, at age 85, was remembered as a lifelong educator, farmer and community leader whose influence stretched far beyond the classroom.

He began his career as a teacher in Fairview before serving as superintendent of Cullman County Schools for 20 years.

Known for his commitment to both education and agriculture, Boyd was described by many as a “man of the soil.” In addition to his decades in public education, he remained deeply rooted in farming and rural life, teaching the value of hard work and stewardship to generations of students.

The dedication ceremony brought together several generations of Boyd’s family, including his wife, Willodean, children Lance Boyd, Susan Boyd Sellers and Trent Boyd, along with numerous in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

Family members said they hope the outdoor classroom will serve as a living tribute to his passion for learning and the land, inspiring future students to carry on his legacy.

Boyd’s lifelong dedication to bridging education and agriculture was recognized publicly in 2016, when he was honored by the North Alabama Agriplex alongside Dr. Tom “Big Doc” Williamson for contributions to the county’s agricultural and educational programs.

The outdoor classroom now stands as a reflection of that commitment — a space designed to bring hands-on learning to students while keeping Boyd’s values alive in his hometown.

Those who knew him recalled not only his leadership, but also his personal kindness. On social media, friends remembered him simply as “a good man,” a teacher who led with humility and compassion.

The project was made possible through the collective effort and support of many individuals and organizations.

Organizers extended their gratitude to all who contributed to creating a space that honors Boyd’s enduring legacy in Fairview and throughout Cullman County.
