GOOD HOPE, Ala. – TheGood Hope City Council held its final October meeting on Monday, Oct. 27, and in addition to some new business items to pass, the council had a special recognition to mark. Monday’s meeting was the last for Councilman Terry Shabel, who did not run for reelection this year.

Shabel’s council seat will be filled by Billy Brown. Shabel has spent the last six years serving on the council and said he is proud of what he and his fellow council members have accomplished in that time.

Mayor Jerry Bartlett thanked Shabel for all the work he’s put in over the years and said he will miss sitting next to him at future meetings.

“Terry has been sitting beside me for the past six years and he’s just been an excellent council member,” Bartlett said. “He comes up and signs checks every Wednesday, he always gives good advice to the council and we’re really going to miss him.”

Shabel said he will miss being part of the council and working to better his community, but he’s also looking forward to spending more time with family.

“What I want people to remember is all the things we did,” Shabel said. “We did so much stuff with the 305 exit and those three stores, all the sewer expansion, all the annexing we’ve done to make the city bigger; we built a park and there are a lot of other things coming up, too. I’m going to miss being a part of all this a lot. But I retired from my job, and both of my sons live in Rochester, Minnesota, so it’ll give me more time to travel and see them.”

In addition to recognizing Shabel, the council also approved the reappointment of members of both the Planning Commission and Board of Adjustments.

Planning Commission – Six-year terms

  • Sonja Fendley, chairman
  • Jeremy Scott

Board of Adjustment – Three-year terms

  • Calvin Mize, chairman
  • Milford Parish
  • Roger Gentry
  • Tyler Mills
  • Preston Prewett
  • Roy Quick, alternate

The Good Hope City Council will hold an organizational meeting and swearing-in ceremony for the new council members on Monday, Nov. 3, at Good Hope City Hall at 6:30 p.m.
