CULLMAN, Ala. – Beginning Nov. 1, The 40 Acre Wood will welcome school field trips, allowing students to learn and play outdoors while exploring the natural beauty of Cullman County.
Owner Wendy Smithson said her goal is to help children step away from technology and classrooms and into the natural world. “We want them to learn while they’re here, but also to have fun memories of being outdoors and enjoying God’s creation,” she said.
The property features wide walking trails, a rustic playground with swings and zip lines and trails that highlight the land’s historical sites, including the foundation of an old homestead dating back to the late 1800s. Students can also participate in a “Bigfoot hunt.” Smithson and her husband have cleared land, widened trails and added a picnic area with seating for 120. The public restrooms are currently under construction and are expected to be completed this fall. Field trips will cost $10 per student, while teachers may attend free of charge.
Smithson emphasized the importance of affordability. “There’s a lot of planning that goes into field trips. Teachers deserve to enjoy the day without extra costs,” she noted.
The venue is also being developed to host various events, including weddings, reunions and scout outings. While open year-round, the restrooms will close from December through March due to freezing conditions.
Bookings are already underway, and Smithson encouraged local schools to schedule early, as dates are filling quickly. Field trips are best suited for students in grades 1 through 7.
