KIMBERLY, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcats traveled to Mortimer Jordan Friday night for a matchup with the Blue Devils and this one came down to the wire. Trailing 14-0 at halftime, the ‘Cats were able to tie things up at 14 early in the fourth quarter and after falling behind 21-14 they scored late to trim the lead to 1 but couldn’t complete the comeback and Mortimer Jordan held on to win it 21-20.

Both offenses got off to a slow start and the game remained scoreless going into the second quarter. A 5-yard touchdown pass gave Mortimer Jordan a 7-0 lead midway through the second quarter and the Blue Devils connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds remaining in the half to take a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the break.

It didn’t take long for Cullman to respond. Kolby Holt received the kickoff to start the third quarter, and he ran it back 91 yards for a touchdown to trim the Blue Devil lead to 14-7 at the start of the second half. The Bearcats kept the momentum going later in the third when quarterback Colt Colvard hit Brooks Loftin over the middle for a big gain to set up the offense on Mortimer Jordan’s 20-yard line. Just a few plays later, Colvard found Morgan Holley wide open in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown and the extra point tied things up at 14 with 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter.

The Blue Devils answered with a big play of their own, scoring on a 50-yard touchdown pass to move back in front 21-14 with nine minutes remaining. The Bearcats hit back on the ensuing possession when Wynn Shannon took a handoff on a reverse and threw it downfield to a wide open Kolby Holt for a 43-yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 21-20 with 5:27 on the clock. However, the ‘Cats were unable to tack on the extra point, and the Blue Devils ran out the remainder of the clock on their next possession, allowing them to hold on to a 21-20 win.

Cullman (0-2) will kick off region play next week with a matchup at Athens.
