CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County residents preparing to review their Medicare coverage can schedule counseling appointments with the Cullman County Commission on Aging ahead of the annual Open Enrollment period, which begins Thursday, Oct. 15.

Enrollment continues through Dec. 7. During that period, Medicare beneficiaries can change Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage, including switching between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage.

Changes made during the enrollment period take effect Jan. 1, 2027, according to Medicare.

The Commission on Aging will provide in-person counseling by appointment only and will not accept walk-ins during Open Enrollment. Residents can call 256-734-1241 to schedule a visit. Appointment availability is limited.

Residents should bring their Medicare card, other health insurance cards and current medication bottles. The commission will not accept written medication lists or pharmacy printouts this year.

Those seeking an evaluation for extra help must also provide household income information, including a current Social Security statement.

Residents who prefer counseling through the mail can call the commission to request a packet. Completed forms must reach the office by Friday, Nov. 13, ahead of the Dec. 7 enrollment deadline.

Medicare encourages beneficiaries comparing plans to check prescription coverage, whether their doctors and pharmacies participate and the costs of premiums, deductibles and medications.

People with other health or drug coverage should consult their benefits administrator or insurance provider before making changes.

The Commission on Aging is located at 1519 Sportsman Lake Road NW in Cullman.

Other counseling options listed by the commission include the State Health Insurance Assistance Program at 1-800-243-5463 and the North Alabama Regional Council of Governments at 256-355-4515.

Residents can also contact Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 or visit www.medicare.gov for plan comparisons and enrollment information.
