CULLMAN, Ala. – AmFirst marked the completion of its rebuilt Cullman branch Sept. 10, celebrating a new facility at 300 Fourth Ave. SW with employees, community leaders and representatives of the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce.
The project replaced the credit union’s previous building rather than simply updating its interior.
Employees continued serving members from a temporary branch on the same property while the old facility was demolished and its replacement constructed, according to AmFirst.
An August 2025 announcement from the credit union placed the start of construction in June of that year.
At the time, AmFirst said the project would provide additional office space, ATMs accessible by vehicle and new safe deposit boxes.
The improvements were intended to accommodate the branch’s growth and make service more convenient for members.
The project also appeared in a September 2025 construction permit report.
Michael Seale’s Sept. 29 article for Hville Blast, using information compiled by Report Construction LLC, listed a Sept. 25 permit for the property with a valuation of $2.875 million.
Sykes Weaver LLC was identified as the builder. That figure represents the reported permit valuation, not a confirmed final project cost.
Reinvestment in Cullman
AmFirst President and CEO Kevin Morris traced the credit union’s commitment to Cullman to 1979.
In the reopening announcement, he pointed to the community’s growth and the institution’s participation in downtown improvements as important parts of its role as a community-chartered credit union.
Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs also connected the rebuild to investment in the surrounding area.
In remarks included in AmFirst’s announcement, Jacobs said establishing a district can encourage property owners to make improvements, and he thanked the credit union for investing early in that process.
During construction, Cullman Branch Manager Daniel Boggan said the new facility would create opportunities to broaden the branch’s local involvement.
Community connections
The Tribune’s archives document AmFirst’s involvement with local schools, including its partnership with Cullman County Schools to recognize teachers and staff.
The credit union provides a $100 gift card to each employee selected for the monthly recognition program. The partnership recognizes work taking place both in classrooms and in the support positions that keep schools operating.
The branch rebuild was completed during AmFirst’s 90th anniversary year.
The institution, formerly America’s First Federal Credit Union, began July 23, 1936, when 19 steel industry employees pooled their resources.
Originally known as the Iron and Steel Workers Credit Union, it initially operated from the Ensley Works of United States Steel before expanding its offices, services and membership over subsequent decades.
