Born to Louise Sachs Long and Douglas Theodore Sr., August 14, 1935, Doug lived a full and accomplished life marked by service, hard work, family, friendship, and a love of sports.
Doug proudly served in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, he returned to Alabama, where he became a partner in All Risk Insurance Agency. A natural entrepreneur, Doug later continued his career as a budget analyst at Kings Bay Naval Base in St. Marys, Georgia before retiring.
After retirement, Doug made his home in Milledgeville, Georgia, where he enjoyed playing golf and, perhaps just as much, Tuesday morning coffee with his friends. He had a lifelong love of sports, whether coaching, playing, or cheering on his favorite teams. A devoted Alabama Crimson Tide football fan, Doug proudly cheered on the Tide. Known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, he had a way of bringing laughter to those around him and making even ordinary moments memorable.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife, Susanne Long; his daughters, Karla Kincaid, Betsy Wakeman (Eric), and Amy Snipes (Ben); and his son, Roger Long. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Jackson (Cody), Kayce Kincaid, Matthew Wakeman, and Sarah Wakeman; his sisters Carrol DeSoto and Matthew Everett; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Douglas Theodore Long Sr., and his brother, Alfred Lawrence (Larry) Long.
Doug will be remembered for his love of family, his friendships, his quick wit, his entrepreneurial spirit, and his lifelong passion for sports. His laughter, stories, and the memories he created will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Susan G. Karman or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
Roll Tide, Doug. You will be forever loved and deeply missed.
