CULLMAN, Ala. – Think you have the best tomatoes in Cullman County? Here’s your chance to prove it. The fourth annual Cullman County Tomato Taste-Off will take place Saturday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at the Festhalle Farmers Market.

Hosted by the Cullman County Extension Office, the free event features three contest categories: Best Tasting Cherry Tomato, Best Tasting Slicing Tomato and Heaviest Slicing Tomato. The competition is open to both youth and adults, with prizes awarded to first-place winners in each category.

Participants must bring tomatoes they have grown themselves, whether from a home garden or farm. Those entering the tasting contests should bring five cherry tomatoes and one slicing tomato. Contestants may enter each category once, with no pre-registration required.

In addition to the competition, members of the Cullman County Extension Master Gardeners will be available throughout the event to answer questions and provide information about growing tomatoes. Young visitors can also stop by the Power of Produce (POP) table, where a tomato-themed snack will be available.

“Tomatoes are a staple of home gardens and local farms,” Cullman County Extension Director Dr. Kira Sims. “Many people are proud of the varieties they grow and how good they taste, so we want to provide an opportunity to highlight those growers and their favorite varieties.”

She added, “We share the winners and their winning tomatoes so others can try them in their own gardens.”
