CULLMAN, Ala. – The Alabama Cooperative Extension System will host its Cool-Season Grazing Management Workshop on Thursday, August 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cullman County Extension Office. The event is part of the ongoing Military Veteran & Beginning Farmer series and is free to attend. A light supper will be provided for participants.

Led by Animal Sciences Extension Agent Dylan Gilbert, the upcoming workshop will guide farmers in preparing their pastureland for the fall and winter grazing season. The session will focus on practical strategies for managing cattle, sheep, goats and other livestock across cooler months.

“Participants will learn how to maximize their pastureland for grazing livestock over the fall and winter,” said Dr. Kira Sims, Cullman County Extension director. “This information will apply to any grazing livestock. Types of forage — grasses and broadleaf plants — rotational grazing and weed management will also be highlighted.”

The timing of the workshop is intentional, said Sims, to give local producers enough lead time before the cool season sets in.

“The program is taught in August to allow farmers time to implement some of the grazing strategies,” she said. “Many people feed hay through the winter, which is okay, but learning how to maximize your pasture and allow those animals to adequately forage can reduce the feed bill.”

Registration is available online at www.aces.edu/event/cool-season-grazing-management-workshop. For more information or accessibility needs, contact Dr. Kira Sims at 256-737-9386 or kira.sims@auburn.edu. All accommodation needs must be submitted to Dr. Sims by July 31.

The Cullman County Extension Office is located at 402 Arnold St. NE in Cullman.
