CULLMAN, Ala. – As part of its monthly Heritage Skills series, the North Alabama Agriplex on Thursday, June 5, hosted an exhibit and presentation on the history of education in Cullman County at the historic Red Hill School House.

During the presentation, which covered the school house’s history, its journey to its current home at Peinhardt Living History Farm, a typical school day in the early 1900s and  the history of each school in Cullman County, retired Cullman County teachers shared stories of classrooms and educators spanning decades. They explained past rituals and invited attendees to participate in traditional activities such as ringing the school bell and singing “My Country, ’Tis of Thee.”

The Red Hill School House serves as a museum, showcasing an exhibit with historical desks, chairs and textbooks, as well as a map marking the locations of 103 former schools across Cullman County. The Red Hill School House, which dates back to the late 1800s, was moved from Marshall County to its current location in Cullman County, where it was restored, in 2007.

“It’s important for us to know our local history and to know how we’ve gotten to where we are today,” said Kathy Lee, coordinator of the Heritage Skills program.
