JV COUNTY TOURNAMENT: Raiders race past Hanceville 59-33, advance to semifinals

HANCEVILLE, Ala. – (3) Good Hope met (5) Hanceville in Saturday’s second JV Boys matchup and the Raiders got off to a fast start in this one. Good Hope built a 32-15 lead by the end of the first half and continued to pull away in the second half, securing their spot in the JV Boys semifinals with a 59-33 win over the Bulldogs.

Baskets by Cayden Adamson and Ryker Hancock and a three-pointer from Ayden Young put the Raiders ahead 7-2 early in the opening period. Adamson finished an and-one play at the line to make it a 10-2 game, but Hanceville responded with buckets from Kade Schulz and Javus Leusby to trim the lead to 10-6. However, Young knocked down another three just before the end of the first quarter to give Good Hope a 13-6 lead at the start of the second.

Eli Drake scored the first four points of the second quarter to stretch the Raider lead to 17-6 and Christian Sims buried a three on Good Hope’s next possession to make it 20-7. Parker Johnson laid one in and Young scored off a turnover to add to the Raider lead midway through the period. Young’s third three-pointer of the game put Good Hope in front 27-9 and Ian Moody followed with a three of his own to make it a 30-9 game. AJ Carnathan responded with a pair of threes on the other end to cut into the Raider lead, but the Bulldogs went into the locker room trailing 32-15 at halftime.

Carnathan knocked down a jumper and Nick Davis hit a pair of free throws to chip away at the lead early in the third quarter, but it didn’t take long for Good Hope to respond. Hancock scored five of the Raiders’ first seven points to start the second half to help build a 20-point lead and baskets by Web Buchanan and Drake made it a 44-19 game midway through the third. Schulz drilled a three on the other end to help cut into the lead, but Adamson buried another three for Good Hope and Young scored in the final seconds of the period to help keep the Raiders in front 54-27 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Young laid one in and Caleb Boles knocked down a three from the right corner to make it a 59-27 game early in the fourth. Leusby and Carnathan continued scoring on the other end to cut into the lead, but it was too little, too late and Good Hope secured a spot in the semifinals with a 59-33 win over the Bulldogs.

Young led the Raiders with 18 points in the win. Adamson added 11, Drake posted eight and Hancock finished with seven. Carnathan led Hanceville with 13 points in the loss and Leusby finished with seven.

Good Hope will face either (2) Cold Springs or (7) Vinemont in the JV Boys semifinals on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
