CULLMAN, Ala. – The City of Cullman and the Cullman Police Department  this week hosted five German police officers who are participating in the STAR International Police Exchange Alabama Chapter program.

CPD Administrative Lt. Eric Cole said the STAR program isn’t an acronym, but a reference to the traditional star-shaped badges of law enforcement.

“The program has chapters across the United States, Germany and Spain,” Cole said. “American officers and STAR members can go to Europe in late spring. European officers travel here in the fall. It is a two-week trip that focuses on introducing each other to our practices, equipment and training. We also try to immerse ourselves in each other’s cultures and communities.”

While here this year, the group had activities in Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Hartselle, Cullman, Oxford and Montgomery and has been exposed to local law enforcement, fire and rescue and state and local government facilities.

Cole shared his excitement and expressed gratitude for his involvement in the program.

“Being part of the STAR International Police Exchange program is a great opportunity to bridge cultures and enhance our policing skills,” Cole said. “Hosting our German colleagues in Cullman allowed us to learn from their experiences while showcasing our community and practices. It’s a mutually beneficial experience that reinforces the value of global cooperation in law enforcement.”

According to City of Cullman Marketing and Public Relations Coordinator Mary Beth Sellers, activities included a helicopter ride with pilot Gene Bates, hiking at Hurricane Creek Park, lunch at the police department, visiting the Warehouse District and practicing at the shooting range. On Thursday, they also visited Hank’s Sports Bar & Rumors Deli and Cullman Fire Rescue.

“It aims to enhance collaboration, share best practices and promote cultural understanding through reciprocal hosting and hands-on experiences in diverse policing environments,” Sellers said.
