WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Lady Warriors hosted Clay-Chalkville and Corner for a tri-match Tuesday night. West Point swept the Lady Cougars in two sets but fell to the Lady Yellow Jackets in a hard-fought, three-set second match.
West Point 2 – Clay-Chalkville 0 (First Match)
West Point jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind a kill and a pair of points by Macie Brown and an ace by Patton Fell. Their lead continued to grow throughout the first set. A point and a kill by Laklin Shadix, plus an ace by Charli Aris, stretched the Lady Warrior lead to 10-3. Katie Beth Yovino collected a pair of aces and Caitlee Simmons added a point, as West Point’s lead swelled to 17-4. Violet Riddle put up a point and a pair of aces to make it a 23-8 game, and the Lady Warriors would go on to win the first set, 25-9.
The second set was a little closer than the first one. West Point held a 6-3 lead behind a point by Simmons, but Clay-Chalkville came back to tie things up at eight. Shadix put up a kill and an ace, and Yovino added a kill as well, as the Lady Warriors took a 12-8 lead. Just like the first set, they added onto their lead. West Point held a 14-10 lead, but they scored the next five points, one on a point by Simmons, and the next three on a point and back-to-back kills by Adrianna Owens, to help stretch their lead to 19-10. The Lady Cougars cut it to five later in the set, but they wouldn’t get any closer after that, as Anna Taylor’s ace helped seal the 25-16 win for the Lady Warriors.
In the first set, Brown finished with a pair of points and a kill. Riddle added a pair of aces and a point, while Yovino collected a pair of aces of her own in the win. In the second set, Shadix led the way with a pair of kills, an ace, and a point. Aris added a pair of kills and an ace. Owens collected a pair of kills and a point, while Simmons put up a trio of points in the win.
Corner 2 – West Point 1 (Second Match)
Both teams went back-and-forth to start out the first set, then West Point broke a 4-4 tie in a big way. They went on an 8-0 run, as five different players helped the Lady Warriors take a 12-4 lead. They later pushed their lead to 15-6, and despite a late push by Corner to get back in the game, West Point was able to hang on and get the 25-17 win over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
The second set saw Corner jump out to a quick 6-1 lead and later pushed their lead to 12-3. The Lady Warriors went on a huge rally to get back in the game, as they scored the next seven points, which included a trio of aces by Yovino, and a point by Simmons, to cut it to 12-10. Later on in the match, an ace and a point by Simmons made it a 14-13 game. The Lady Yellow Jackets held a 21-17 lead, but behind a kill by Bella Thornton, a point by Simmons, and an ace by Aris, Corner’s lead was cut to one at 21-20. Later on in the set, a pair of kills by Shadix gave West Point a 23-22 lead, but Corner collected the final three points of the set to win, 25-23.
It was close throughout the third and deciding set. Corner held onto a 6-4 lead, but a kill by Simmons cut it to 6-5. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored the next five points to take an 11-5 lead, but the Lady Warriors cut it to 12-9 on a point by Patton Fell. West Point didn’t get any closer after that, though, as Corner would go on to take the third set, 15-10.
In the first set, Shadix finished with a pair of points and a kill. Brown added a kill and a point. Simmons collected an ace, and Yovino ended up with a point in the win. In the second set, Simmons finished with four points and an ace. Yovino added a trio of kills. Brown put up a pair of kills and an ace, and Shadix added a pair of kills and a point in the loss. In the third set, Simmons put up a kill and an ace. Aris added an ace. Owens ended up with a kill, and Fell collected a point in the loss.
West Point will travel to Lawrence County to take on Brewer and Priceville Thursday.
