Obituary: Charles Maloney

Funeral Services for Mr. Charles Maloney, age 85, of Crane Hill, will take place on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at St. Andrews Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Robert Lancaster officiating. His visitation will take place from 12 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Bowman’s Chapel Methodist Church in Crane Hill.

Mr. Maloney passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Woodland Village Nursing Home in Cullman. He was born and raised in Jackson, Kentucky until he joined the Navy at the age of 17. He was stationed in Pensacola, Florida, served in Hong Kong and the Philippines and on the U.S.S. Onslow (AVP-48). After the Navy, he lived in Fairhope until settling in Cullman for the remainder of his life.

Mr. Maloney worked for several manufacturing businesses including, Americold, Westing House, and Southern Precision as a machinist until his retirement. In his later years, you could often see Charlie, as he was affectionately called, at the Jack’s restaurant sitting with his Breakfast Buddies every morning. He was an amazing wood-working craftsman, building several porch swings, coffee tables, and dining cabinets, for which he was most proud of. Charlie also enjoyed cross-stitching in his spare time; He won numerous blue ribbons by entering his works in the Cullman County Fair.

Mr. Maloney also received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Hospice of Cullman County in 1997, for the many hours of selfless dedication and contributions to benefit those in need. He also donated blood several times a year. Charlie enjoyed gardening, fishing, and Alabama football. Mr. Maloney was a devoted and giving member of St. Andrews Methodist Church and was a member and teacher of the Seekers Sunday School Class.

Mr. Maloney is survived by two daughters: Debbie Freeman (Charles) of Crane Hill and Lynn Benefield (David) of Lineville; one grandson, Lawson Benefield (Katie) of Lineville, with one great-granddaughter on the way; plus several nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Finch and Jean Coomer Maloney; four brothers and two sisters.

Active Pallbearers will be Lawson Benefield, David Benefield, and Charles Freeman.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Seekers Sunday School Class, His Jack’s Breakfast Buddies, and Jesse Ude.

In lieu of flowers, Donations may be made to the St. Andrews Methodist Church.

Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville and Cullman-Heritage Funeral Home of Cullman are in charge of arrangements.
