CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Christkindlmarkt is back for its second year beginning Friday, Dec. 9, and continuing through Sunday, Dec. 11 at Festhalle Marktplatz and in the Cullman Economic Development Agency parking lot at 200 First Ave. NE. The hours are Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m.

The Christkindlmarkt is an open-air market will feature live music, entertainment, activities for children, traditional German foods and beverages and homemade and handmade gifts. The market is fashioned after similar Christmas markets that originated in Germany. According to Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Executive Director Nathan Anderson, this year’s market will be bigger than last year’s. As of Monday, 31 vendors were signed up to participate.

Early markets were mentioned in the history books of Vienna, Munich and Frankfort, but Dresden’s, in 1434, is considered the first authentic Christmas Market. Christkindlmarkts (Christ Child Markets) in Nuremberg and Dresden attract approximately 2 million visitors each holiday season, and the Stuttgart and Frankfurt markets draw more than 3 million people every year.
