Obituary: Hugh D. Crawford

Funeral services for Hugh Dennis Crawford, 97, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2020 at Cullman Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Cullman City Cemetery with military honors. Rev. Steve Rodgers will be officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-2 p.m. prior to the service.

Cullman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Crawford passed away Nov. 13, 2020.  He was born in Lavonia, Georgia Oct. 7, 1923 to the late Ben F. and Ethel Wilson Crawford.

Survivors include daughter Lisa Balderrama; three grandsons Patrick DeMonia, Christian Balderrama, and Jordan Balderrama; four great-grandchildren; family and friends.

Mr. Crawford served his country as a T/Sergeant in the Air Force during World War II.  His tour of duty was in China, Burma and India from 1943-1946.  After returning from the war, Mr. Crawford attended West Georgia College in Carrolton, Georgia.  There he met and later married his wife, Leila Simmons.  They were married for 71 years until her death on Oct. 29, 2020.  Mr. Crawford earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Georgia.  Mr. Crawford’s first career was training World War II veterans during the day and math at night.  He trained with Gold Kist and worked in many capacities in Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama and retired after 33 years of service.  Following his retirement, he worked as circuit court bailiff with Judge Jack C. Riley.

Mr. Crawford was a life deacon at First Baptist Church in Cullman.  He served his Lord and fellow man in many capacities.  He was on the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions for two terms.  For 22 years, Mr. Crawford was a volunteer worker for Hospice of Cullman County.  He was one of the organizers, a charter member, and a board member.
