CULLMAN, Ala. – On Super Tuesday, Cullman County voters gave Jeff “Clem” Clemons 49.66% of the vote for chairman of the Cullman County Commission, almost double those of runner-up incumbent Chairman Kenneth Walker’s 27.66%. With more than 98% of the vote in and only provisional ballots still to count, Clemons needed only 50.1% to avoid a runoff. Probate Judge Tammy Brown, who oversees Cullman County elections, has previously pointed out, though, that she has never seen the typically small number of provisional ballots change the outcome of a vote during her tenure at the Probate Office.
Awaiting the last box of non-provisional ballots, Clemons told The Tribune, “Man, it would be an honor if we could go ahead and get that 50.1; that would be an honor,” and if the race goes to a runoff, “I’ll hit the ground running. That’s what I’ve been doing since November, and I’ll continue to do that because, you know, I want to continue to serve the great people of Cullman County to the best of my ability. We can do a lot of good for each other; we just have to work hard every day to make a difference, and I hope that’s me.
“I’m just an everyday person that’s always worked hard for the people of Cullman County, and it’s an honor to serve the people of this county. We’ve just got to work hard. And, you know, we’ve got a lot of work to do. It don’t matter who wins; we’ve got a lot of work to do to serve the people of this county.”
Philip Widner, who finished with a disappointing 13.77% of the vote, said afterward, “We just want to thank everyone who has come out and supported us. We just really appreciate everyone who has helped us. Of course, it didn’t turn out like we wanted it to, but the people have spoken. Whoever our new chairman might be, right now we don’t really know, but whoever it is, Linda and I want to encourage everyone to pray for them. Again, we thank everybody and God bless Cullman County.”
Last-place finisher Wiley Kitchens said, “I thought it was a good campaign. I didn’t hear any mudslinging and I tried to run a positive campaign on the issues that I ran on- drug and alcohol abuse and mental health. You do what you can do and let it go at that. I’ll be around here. I’ll probably take a couple vacations though.”
Said Walker, “I feel good about it. I’m a little disappointed; I thought we’d be a little bit closer than we were. It’s going to be very tough to beat a candidate that the sheriff’s sponsoring, supporting. But I do feel good about it. It’s going to take some hard work, and we’re going to work hard and do what we can. I’m still asking for everybody’s prayers, support and their vote.”
The runoff election will be March 31, 2020.
County education sales tax fails
In a close vote, the proposed 1-cent county sales tax for education failed to pass, receiving 43.36% “yes” votes to 56.54% against.
After the results were known, Cullman County Schools Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette released this statement:
“First, I want to thank everyone that supported our endeavor to pass the tax referendum and to all those that asked questions and shared input as we met across the community.
“Although the vote did not go as we had hoped for, we accept the outcome of the vote and the voice of the voters. Our school system will continue to strive for excellence and to put the students of our county first. We have had great success over the last few years with increasing our graduation rate and college career ready indicator. Please know that we have the best interest of your child at heart and will continue to work hard for them.”
Cullman County School Board
Incumbent Gene Sullins defeated Wayne Willingham for Cullman County Board of Education District One (West Point) with 58.54% of the vote, for his third term in office.
State Board of Education constitutional amendment fails
Amendment One, that would have changed seats on the Alabama State Board of Education from elected to appointed, also failed, and by a wide margin of 79.23% against to only 20.77% for.
Gina Maiola, press secretary for Gov. Kay Ivey, issued this statement:
“Amendment One was a bold and ambitious effort to transform our state’s public schools. Governor Ivey was willing to step out and support this idea because she firmly believed leadership – and change – started with the Board itself. Tonight, however, it appears the fear of losing the right to elect our State School Board members was greater than the confidence we had that fundamental change could be made. While disappointed, the governor’s resolve to improve our public education system remains intact. Amendment One is not where her plans for education stop, and you’ll see her continue to be more innovative and creative with her approach to improving Alabama.”
Cullman County goes big for Tuberville in U.S. Senate race
Cullman County voters gave Tommy Tuberville 45.35% of the local vote, followed by Jeff Sessions with 26.03%. Tuberville and Sessions were also one and two statewide, and will face each other in a runoff.
