Obituary: Larry Floyd Smith

Larry Floyd Smith, 65, passed peacefully Thursday, Feb. 27, 2020 at Cullman Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Smith was born Feb. 23, 1955 in Cullman, Alabama to Floyd and Tommie Knott Smith.

Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents and brother Donald Smith.

He is survived by wife Janet Smith (née Strickland); children Steven (Callie) Smith, Jeremiah (Tiffany) Smith and Pamela Wright; brothers Ricky, Gary, and Tony Smith; and grandchildren Mary-Grace, Weston, Madison, Maci, and Mabri Smith, Allie and Jester Wright.

During 1974-1975 Mr. Smith joined the National Guard in Fort Polk, Louisiana but then later found his calling as an EMS where he trained at the Helen Keller Memorial Hospital for eight weeks at North West of Florence later receiving his certification and proceeded to join the rescue squad in Muscle Shoals. Larry has served with the fire department since 1985. He was captain at Fairview Volunteer Fire and had previously worked with Berlin Volunteer Fire as assistant chief. Larry assisted various other departments as well as Cullman EMS throughout his career. He loved his community and his fire family.

If anyone knew Larry, you would know he was a kind hearted and caring man, always ready to help one another. He had a personality that you’ll never forget and a contagious laugh that could light up a room. He was definitely an inspiration to many and his volunteer work over the course of 35 years will always be greatly appreciated. It’s an honor to know such an amazing man.

The family will receive friends at Moss Service Funeral Home Sunday, March 1, 2020 from 5-7 p.m. The Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be in the chapel of Moss Service Funeral Home Monday, March 2, 2020 at 11 a.m. He will lie in state from 10 a.m. until service time. Following the service, Larry will be transported to Fairview Fire Station for his Last Call.
