CULLMAN, Ala. – Young animal advocate Denna Chivers is getting ready for her third annual yard sale to benefit the Cullman County Animal Shelter. This year, on Saturday, May 18, the yard sale will be held in the Seventh Street Baptist Church parking lot from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. (The sale was originally scheduled for May 11, but it has been rescheduled due to weather.)
Chivers, 11, began helping the shelter’s animals a few years ago by saving her Christmas and birthday money and buying items for them. She eventually decided to have a yard sale to raise money for bigger items that would enhance the shelter. Last year she was able to purchase a covered pavilion and a picnic table for the shelter’s outdoor facilities.
Her generosity was celebrated last summer with a special ribbon cutting where she was joined by the Cullman County commissioners, Sheriff Matt Gentry and the shelter staff. Captain Tim McKoy had a special sign made that hangs from the pavilion in honor of Chivers. The pavilion offers a shady area for the dogs to sit under during their daily outside time. The area is also perfect for visitors who want to interact with the dogs as they find the perfect one to adopt.
This year’s yard sale will include a Mother’s Day gift basket raffle. The basket includes a massage, haircut, manicure and more. The drawing will take place at noon and tickets can be purchased for $1 each, 6 for $5 or 30 for $20. Those who bring cat or dog food will also get a free ticket.
Chivers is a fifth grader at Cullman Christian School and hopes to help animals now and into the future as she works to become a veterinarian. From a very early age, Chivers has understood the importance of adopting animals from your local animal shelter.
She said, “Some people don’t have pets. So I would really like for some more people to have pets, to adopt them, because some animal shelters, they put the animals to rest, and I just don’t like that. So I’d really like for more people to adopt animals.”
The homeless animals of Cullman County have a great voice in Denna Chivers. She is dedicated to making their lives better and educating others about the need for animal adopters.
McKoy said last summer of a then 10-year-old Chivers, “I think it’s amazing that a 10-year-old would have the fortitude to donate all of her hard earned money, and I am grateful that she chose to help the shelter animals.”
