HOLLY POND, Ala. – The Holly Pond Town Council on Tuesday night spent a good portion of its meeting discussing new speed limit signs as well as new school zone speed limit signs with yellow flashing lights.

The Town recently updated its speed limit ordinance. School zones are 20 mph and all other roads within town limits are 35 mph (with the exception of U.S. Highway 278); roads with limits already less than 30 mph remained the same.

Mayor Bill Oliver said he will order new signs for the roads this week. He said the Town will need to buy at least three school zone speed limit signs, each one costing approximately $1,200. The school zone speed limit signs are expected to be installed prior to the 2019-2020 school year.

In other business, Oliver provided an update on the grant application process for the sewer plant, saying, “You know, we’re still working on the sewer grant application. We did a pre-application; we’re working on the application now, and they sent us some things we (Oliver and Town Attorney Dan Willingham) do have to fill out.”

The council also addressed the Town’s landscaping needs. One company does the job now, handling the park and other areas.

“They do a good job, not to complain about that, but we never really okayed that,” said Oliver.

According to Councilwoman Lou Thomas, the business has been doing the Town’s landscaping work for 10 years.

“I think it’s something we need to look at on a yearly basis,” said Oliver. “I think it should be addressed every year.”

Oliver also notified the council that the lawnmower used for the park and other parts of the town is no longer usable. A motion was made to replace the old mower with whatever Oliver can find in the $13,000 to $14,000 price range, which passed.

The Holly Pond Town Council meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Guy Hunt Library. A special council meeting to discuss the Town’s budget is scheduled on May 20 at 6 p.m. The next regular council meeting will be June 3.
