Cullman council approves special events, recognizes police officers

CULLMAN – This week, the Cullman City Council, in addition to handling regular meeting business, took time out to recognize two Cullman City Police officers for almost a century of service between them.

Officer Jack Springer, who began his service with the Cullman Police Department in 1968, was honored with a 50-year service pin. Springer also served in the U.S. Air Force. Officer Terry Heaton, a Vietnam veteran, started his career with the department in 1978 and was honored with a 40-year pin. Heaton is the only remaining Vietnam veteran working at the department.

During the tourism report portion of the meeting, Cullman Parks, Recreation, & Sports Tourism Executive Director Nathan Anderson gave an update on the new Connected Playground at Ingle park. The grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new park will be on Friday, June 29 from 4-6 p.m.

The council approved a request to assist in the movement of Cullman's Little Pantry. The free food pantry is located in the empty lot near the Mary Carter Paint Store. One of the pantry’s organizers, Martha Lawrence, requested the City’s help in moving the pantry due to the items inside being damaged by exposure to sun and the rain. The structure will be moved closer to the Mary Carter building so that it will be shaded.

A request for a special event permit to hold a 5K run and a 1-mile walk to help to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis sufferers was approved. The run is slated for Aug. 18, 2018 at 7 a.m. and will start and finish at Buffalo Wild Wings. The overall winners of the 5K, male and female, will receive a year’s worth of wings.

The council also approved a request for a festival on July 13, 2018 from noon to 9 p.m. in conjunction with downtown Cullman’s July 2nd Fridays event. The festival will feature a 40-foot Ferris wheel, live music and will act as a fundraiser for a free summer lunch and learn program.

In other council business, the council:

– approved a request from Larry Jones, Cullman Sanitation Department superintendent, to purchase 48 containers and one compactor from Wastequip, LLC on the NJPA bid list in the amount not to exceed $52,312.

– approved a request from Scott Talley, Cullman Street Department superintendent, to purchase a mower max machine with a 30-foot boom and rotary cutting and mulching attachments from Coblenz Equipment and Parts Co., Inc. on the ACCA bid list in the amount not to exceed $190,695.

– had a second reading of Ordinance No. 2018-33 to amend the business license ordinance of the City of Cullman (changing the number of yard sales from one 2-day yard sale to two 3-day yard sales).

– approved Resolution No. 2018-60 amending Resolution No. 2017-110 to increase the annual budget for the City of Cullman due to the damages from the hail storm on March 19, 2018.

– approved the appointment of Zach Lee to the Cullman Zoning Board

The next Cullman City Council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 16 in the city hall auditorium.  The public is invited to attend.
