From the Files of 1955:

DeLane Hulsey, Cullman High’s star baseball pitcher, signed with the Saint Louis Cardinals on Monday afternoon. He signed the one year maximum salary contract and left Wednesday for Columbus, Georgia, where he will play Sally League Class A ball.

DeLane is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F.D. Hulsey. He graduated from Cullman High School with the Class of 1955.

 

Mrs. Bertha Dean, age 70, of Route Three, Hanceville, died at the Cullman Hospital on Monday morning and funeral services were held on Tuesday, with Reverend Harvey Edwards officiating. Bev Howell, of Hanceville Moss Service directed interment in the Sapp Cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, Will Dean; three sons, O.E., of Michigan, S.A. and J.C., of Route Three, Hanceville; two daughters, Mrs. Jewell Allred, of Holly Pond and Mrs. Calvin Sanders, of Warrior; twenty-two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; six brothers and one sister.

 

George Stiefelmeyer, Junior, has been appointed as a member of the City of Cullman Utilities Board to succeed Melvin Dahlke, who resigned. Other members of this board are: J.W. Arnold, chairman and Conrad Howard, secretary-treasurer.

 

Mrs. Alice Self, age 69, died at her home at Brushy Pond on June 8th and funeral services were held at Ryan’s Creek on Friday, with Reverend Sim Calvert and Reverend J.B. Thompson officiating. Moss Service directed interment.

Pallbearers were: Opher Goodwin, Odia Cruse, Earnest Swann, Dwight and Buford Nicholas and Clellie Kilgo.

Surviving are her husband, R.O. Self; four daughters, Mrs. Guy Nicholas, of Cullman, Mrs. George Cairns, of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. David De LeCruz, of Japan and Mrs. Watson Caudill, of Akron, Ohio; two sons, Earl Self, of Cullman and Dwight Self, of Gadsden; eighteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

 

Brushy Pond News:

A special service will be held at Ryan Creek Baptist Church on Sunday, June 19th, honoring its oldest members. Everyone has a special invitation to attend.

Nella Dean Morgan is ill with the mumps.

 Mr. and Mrs. Harlton Haynes and Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Graves are the parents of baby girls.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Self were held at Ryan Creek Church, on Friday afternoon. 

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Hancock and family have purchased a new television set.
