Our goal is to make a stand against epilepsy by raising money for research as it is funded extremely low compared to the number of people affected. We also want to raise awareness of epilepsy because there is a lot of misinformation out there.”
Heather Conn

CULLMAN – Doosie Day was held on Saturday, July 30 at Depot Park. The day was filled with lots of fun and a raffle was held. Unfortunately, the rains came and the snazzy prizes that were being raffled had to be put away before the winners were drawn. Thankfully, Doosie Day will pick up where it left off today, Sunday, July 31, beginning at 11 a.m. There will be a lemonade stand, bake sale, raffle chances for purchase and a bounce house – free jumping with any purchase!

“Doosie Day was created to try to draw people to our lemonade stand,” said Heather Conn. “Our lemonade stand was held to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation in conjunction with Lemonade for Livy. Lemonade for Livy was started by a little girl whose sister has epilepsy. She was hoping to raise money to fund seizure research for her sister and she did so by holding a lemonade stand. Well, her community rallied around her and since then, ‘Lemonade for Livy’ has grown tremendously. ‘Lemonade for Livy’ is trying to get a lemonade stand held in every state and we are the only one in the state of Alabama! Our stand name is ‘What a Doosie’ in honor of our son, Elijah (EJ, as he likes to be called).”

“Elijah had his first seizure on April 11, 2015. Since then his seizures have become more frequent and he has developed new seizure types. The seizure types he has (four different kinds) are telltale symptoms of a seizure disorder call Doose Syndrome. This is where we get our stand name, ‘What a Doosie’ from. They call children that have Doose Syndrome, ‘Doosies.’ EJ most definitely fits the bill and truly is a Doosie,” she chuckled.

“Doose Syndrome is heavily resistant to anti-epileptic drugs so it is very hard to treat. I can tell you lots about it and us but don't want to bore you with unnecessary information,” she smiled.

“We held the lemonade stand on Friday and had wonderful community participation and are extremely grateful! I have a million things I'd like to say, but just like ‘Lemonade for Livy’ our goal is to make a stand against epilepsy by raising money for research as it is funded extremely low compared to the number of people affected. We also want to raise awareness of epilepsy because there is a lot of misinformation out there.”
