CULLMAN – The group is still in its infancy, but the North-Central Alabama Young Democrats (NCAYD) are already making a name for themselves locally in Cullman, Walker and Blount counties, the three areas they represent, and statewide within the Alabama Young Democrats chapter.

NCAYD hosted a Community Fun Day on Sunday at Sportsman Lake in Cullman, where they served up free food and games, music, voter registration and a platform for party members from throughout the state to convey their messages on the state of affairs in Alabama and nationally.

With almost 100 people in attendance, the event was well received and attended by local voters and the speakers were given a warm welcome by the Cullman community on hand.

“The importance of today’s event is to build the grassroots efforts in Alabama, particularly in Cullman, Walker and Blount counties. We wanted to start here in Cullman because we had the most response from the county party here. The grassroots is truly where it starts. I feel like the Democratic Party steered away from that in the recent years so 2016-2018 are all about bringing back the grassroots efforts and that’s what we’re starting right here in Cullman,” stated NCAYD President Josh Coleman, a Cullman native and West Point High School graduate.

Noteworthy equal rights and democratic values advocate Ambrosia Starling emceed the event, bringing to stage the day’s speakers and entertainers.

The afternoon’s speakers included U.S. Senate candidate Ron Crumpton, Human Rights Campaign Community Organizer Torri Wolfe-Sisson, Alabama High School Democrats President Emma Turner, UAB College Democrats President Caleb Carter, Forward Alabama Chairman Bob Parker and Alabama Young Democrats President Beth Clayton.

Cullman County Democrats member and retired Cullman City Schools teacher Ernestine Linton attended the event to show her support for NCAYD and young Democrats everywhere. She shared, “I am a Yellow Dog Democrat and I will be until I die. I want my pursuit of life, liberty and happiness to remain in place and I don’t want anyone taking it away from me. Anybody who wants to vote the other way can do that, but they’re doing it at their own peril. I think it’s wonderful what these young people are doing. I am so happy to see them getting involved because all I’ve looked at for the last eight years that I’ve been involved in the party here has been people from age 40 and up. I’m 73 and we’ve got to have people to come along and take our place.”
