HUNTSVILLE – Two weeks after the car wreck that broke four of her vertebrae and took the life of her friend Whitney Cotton, Vinemont High School’s Anna Hughes underwent another surgery today at Huntsville Hospital.

The 17-year-old had a scheduled surgery to remove her breathing tube, which she’s been on since the night of the wreck, and then had a tracheotomy. The tracheotomy is hoped to aid in Hughes’ breathing as she continues to be on a ventilator. The latest news is that the young lady is still sedated with her parents by her side.

Hughes’ sister, Lindsey Estes, provided an update, “Her surgery went well. They did have to trach her, but they are hoping she will be able to go to rehab soon.”

The soon-to-be senior Hughes will continue her stay in the neuro intensive care unit in Huntsville until her doctors deem her healthy enough to move into a rehabilitation hospital that will continue her treatment.
