CULLMAN – The City of Cullman Planning Commission met in the Lucille N. Galin Auditorium at Cullman City Hall on Monday evening with a brief agenda and expedited meeting. After the meeting was called to order and March’s minutes were approved, business progressed to the public hearings of two short-form subdivisions.

The first hearing dealt with land located at Burrow North at County Road 222 and County Road 469, owned by the Cullman Economic Development Agency, and the proposed separation of five acres on the northwest corner of the 55+ acre tract. If divided, the five acres would be made available for purchase to the Cullman Electric Cooperative for construction of a new substation. It was stated that the substation is needed for tentative industrial development at the newly opened Interstate 65/County Road 222 interchange.

Dale Greer, vice president of the Cullman Economic Development Agency, spoke in favor of the proposal, and the subdivision passed unanimously. No one spoke against the division of property.

The second public hearing concerned dividing one lot, owned by Cullman Savings Bank and located at AL Highway 157 Northeast and Eva Road, into two lots. Speaking as a proponent of the subdivision was the bank’s president, John Riley. With no one speaking against the proposal, the subdivision passed unanimously.

Lastly, a conditional use request was granted for Colonel Dialysis, located at 1830 Lee Ave. SW, to house a doctor’s office in its building. Per Chad Burks, the owner of the building, no changes would be required in the existing building. Several comparable businesses exist in the area and the addition of the doctor’s office met with no opposition.

Members of the Planning Commission are Mayor Max A. Townson, Andy Page, Bobby Kelley, Wendell Copeland, Cherri Drake, Gene Green, Mike Voss, Steve Cummings and Barrett Richard. All were present except for Drake.

The Planning Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month at City Hall. The next meeting will be held on Monday, May 2. Meetings are open to the public. For more information, please contact Amber Duke at 256-775-7203.
