FAIRVIEW – Playing under gorgeous weather conditions for the first time this golf season, the Fairview Aggies put together a satisfying performance in their own invitational at the Cullman Golf Course Tuesday.

The Aggies had three very good scores to put them third overall in the field of 16 teams that participated. Fairview shot an 18-hole score of 45, finishing second to Decatur Heritage's 308 and White Plains' 331.

Decatur Heritage won thanks to Sam Murphy's one-under par 71 and respectable scores by Max Murphy with a 6-over 77 and John Reese Hamn with an 8-over 79.

Leading the way for the Aggies was Hunter McKelvey who had an 8-over 72, seventh best individually. Hunter Whitehead tallied an 83, Austin Scott an 86 and Seth Lancaster a 96 to round out the scoring for Kurt Knight's squad.

Good Hope golfer Cole Pearson fired a 79, tying with Hamn for seventh place among 98 participants.

Cullman's Luke Wilson showed an effective day on the course. The senior, who signed a scholarship with Wallace State last week, had a 2-over 74, tied for second on the day with Layton Bussey of White Plains and Anthony Lumpkin from Douglas.

Coming in fourth behind Fairview on team scoring was Susan Moore with a 352, Walker and Albertville tied for fifth place at 357, then Thompson and Altamont tied for seventh at 372, West End at 378, Brindlee Mountain next with a 382, Douglas a 393, Good Hope 400, Cullman 408 and Athens at 454.

Wilson, Pearson and McKelvey earned All-Tournament honors for finishing in the top seven.

The golfers were appreciative of spring-like weather, five days before spring rolls in. The event was played with the temperature in the mid-80s, a slight breeze and the course drying out following a round of rain from Sunday and Monday.

Now Knight and Fairview will host the inaugural girls’ invitational at Cullman GC Thursday. Thirteen teams are expected to participate with shotgun start slated for 1 p.m.
