ARLEY, Ala. – Meek built a 38-point halftime lead and rolled past visiting Cherokee 68-14 Friday night.
Before kickoff, American Legion Post 223 presented the Town of Arley with a Blue Star flag during a ceremony held in remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Once play began, Meek quickly took control. After kicking off to open the game, the Tigers forced a turnover on Cherokee’s opening possession.
Evan McCay returned the takeaway and was also credited with the game’s first touchdown.
Meek continued extending its lead throughout the first half while keeping the Indians off the scoreboard. The Tigers carried a 38-0 advantage into halftime.
Penalties were Meek’s primary obstacle. The Tigers were penalized seven times during the first five minutes of the third quarter, repeatedly interrupting the flow of the game.
Despite those setbacks, Meek continued adding to its lead.
Cherokee broke through with two touchdowns late in the third quarter, but those were the Indians’ only scores of the night.
McCay remained active defensively in the fourth quarter, intercepting a pass before the play was nullified by a holding penalty.
Dalton Freeman then scored Meek’s final two touchdowns as the Tigers closed out the 68-14 victory.
Meek will travel to Addison for a Class 1A, Region 7 matchup at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18.
