CULLMAN, Ala. – As flag football continues to grow, especially among youth, OmniSports Academy’s OmniFootball league has seen a surge in participation.

Since its inception in 2018, the league has seen an increase in participation every single season. It peaked last year with nearly 300 participants, making it one of OSA’s most popular programs.

“The sport continues to gain momentum nationwide, especially with its inclusion in the 2028 Olympics and the growing number of school-based programs. Flag football provides an accessible entry point for young athletes, teaches teamwork and athletic fundamentals, and gives children another opportunity to stay active and engaged. We’re excited to continue building on that success and introducing even more families to the game,” Nathan Anderson, executive director of CPRST, said.

Accessibility is a hallmark of the sport, with age divisions ranging from 3-4 years old all the way up to 13-14, with divisions for both boys and girls.

With the success of the program, OSA announced Rec+, an additional level more focused towards competition, rather than recreation. Top players from each division will be eligible to join Rec+ after the regular season and compete against other top players across north Alabama in the Alabama Youth Football League, in a format similar to travel sports.

“Our athletics team, led by Ashley Morton, launched the Rec+ initiative, allowing us to build on the fun, accessible environment our recreational league provides while giving players who want more competition the chance to represent Cullman on a regional and state stage,” Anderson said.

The NFL-backed league will kick off again this fall, and registration remains open until July 2. More information on the league, as well as registration can be found at omnisportsacademy.com.
