CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Commission at its meeting on April 21, recognized Ryans Creek Cemetery and Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery for being listed on the Alabama Historical Commission’s Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.

According to the Alabama Historical Commission, the register is “the state’s official list of historic cemeteries in Alabama. The Alabama Historical Commission (AHC) considers historic cemeteries particularly worthy of preservation and appreciation, and therefore deserving of this special recognition.”

The Commission also honored Water Department employee Jerry Reynolds for 26 years of service. CARTS employees Jody Glover and Cindy Burgett were recognized for winning first and second place in the bus division at the Alabama RTAP Training Roadeo.

The Commission approved an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to improve County Road 222, pledging $200,000 in matching funds as part of a larger grant-supported road improvement project. Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, and Rep. Cindy Myrex, R-Cullman, were present and recognized for their roles in helping secure funding for the project. Officials said the project will improve a busy section of the county’s longest road.

Several resolutions were adopted, including lowering speed limits to 25 mph on County Roads 1658, 546 and 338. Commissioners also agreed to join the Alabama Inter-Local Mutual Aid Agreement and the state’s remnant defendant opioid settlement.

The commission approved several funding measures, such as $50,000 in Opioid Response Funds for Restoring Women Outreach and $30,721.68 for the District Attorney’s Office to support related programs. Commissioners also approved a $2,500 community grant and a $23,000 agreement for Fourth of July entertainment at Smith Lake Park.

Other actions included selling a surplus 2017 Dodge Ram to the Vinemont-Providence Fire Department for $26,000, buying a 2027 Chevrolet Equinox for county use and purchasing computers for the Reappraisal Office. The commission also approved several subdivision plats in District 1.

The countywide “Free Dump Day” cleanup event will take place during the month of May, allowing residents to dispose of certain items at no cost. Additional details on specific dates, locations and participation guidelines are expected to be announced by the county.

The Commission will meet next on Thursday, May 21, with a work session at 4 p.m. and a meeting to follow at 6 in the commission meeting room.
