CULLMAN, Ala. – After the girls team blew out the Blue Devils 8-0 to seal their area, Cullman’s boys took the field to face off against Mortimer Jordan in the final game of the season.
In their prior matchup, Cullman took a 6-1 victory, and while the Bearcats only scored half as many points this game, it was in their control start to finish.
To open the scoring, Bearcat forward Carlos Medina snuck one by the Blue Devils goalkeeper in the 33rd minute of the first half. Then, just a minute and a half later, Grayson Meharg tucked a shot just under the crossbar to give Cullman a 2-0 lead which they’d take into the half.
After threatening on multiple possessions, Meharg broke through again in the 25th minute of the second half. Out on the wing, he sent one from deep, sneaking in another high shot to make it 3-0, a lead the Bearcats would hold to seal the victory and the area title.
“We look strong. It’s an incredibly joyful experience to get to work with a group of guys who love the game and who work so hard every week. I asked them to suffer for each other, asked them to desire it every week and asked them to always believe in every single game of the regular season. They’ve shown up and done those things, and I couldn’t ask for any more because that’s how we get better,” Cullman head coach Will Drake said after the win.
The Bearcats now await their matchup for the first round of state playoffs next week.
