CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library System is seeking volunteers, saying they play a vital role in keeping local libraries running efficiently.
CCPLS Assistant Director Shelby Creekmore said the library is always recruiting volunteers, as schedules and life circumstances change.
“The library always needs volunteers,” she said. “We are grateful to be part of a community that always shows up to support us in various ways, and this is one of the big ways people can help.”
Volunteers assist with several essential functions, including shelving books, organizing materials, supporting programs and helping keep the library accessible for patrons. Even a small time commitment can make a significant difference.
“If someone can commit to one or two hours per week, that can help the library immensely,” Creekmore said.
The library works with volunteers to create efficient schedules that fit their availability. Adults and students are welcome to apply, though volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
For those unable to commit to a regular weekly schedule, Creekmore suggested joining the Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County, which offers opportunities to assist with special events and programs on an occasional basis.
Creekmore said volunteers support everything from pulling reserved books for patrons to helping direct children during story time and setting up for guest speakers.
“Volunteers are essential for keeping a library operating efficiently. They give our staff members time back and keep the library running. Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and invest in the library’s future. The best way to learn what your community needs is to serve its people,” she said.
