HOLLY POND, Ala. – Surrounded by friends, family and members of the community she has called home for most of her life, Louise Carr celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Holly Pond Senior Center.

The day was filled with laughter, well wishes and the click of dominoes, a fitting tribute to Carr, who continues to dominate at the game after all these years. Carr was the picture of celebration, dressed for the occasion in a royal tiara and cape, as guests enjoyed a fruit-covered birthday cake and spent the afternoon together in her honor.

Several members of the community and local government officials attended the milestone celebration, including Randall Shedd, who shared a special birthday message from Sen. Garlan Gudger, R-Cullman, recognizing Carr’s century of life and her contributions to the community.

Born in Cullman County, about 4 miles from Holly Pond at her family home, Carr is the daughter of Lonnie and Nina Mae Bice and granddaughter of Alice and William Bice. Carr married her husband in 1947 at 21. He worked in the steel industry with U.S. Steel and American Bridge. The couple shared more than five decades of marriage before his passing in 2000. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family and hard work. Carr worked for the railroad and at the Oneida Sewing Plant, and she also owned and operated a chicken farm. She is the proud mother of one son, Harold Carr. Her family has since grown to include grandchildren Bradley Carr and Holly Dutton, as well as great-grandchildren Jackson Dutton and Addie Dutton.

Throughout her life, Carr has also enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, crafts and puzzles. Though she has also lived in Birmingham, Detroit and Cullman, Holly Pond has always remained home. She has been a member of the Holly Pond Senior Center since 2004, where she remains an active and beloved presence.
