CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Public Library will host a Meet and Greet event Thursday, Feb. 12, from 4-6 p.m., inviting community members to come out, enjoy fellowship and coffee, and learn more about the Friends of the Public Libraries of Cullman County (FPLCC). The event will give attendees an opportunity to meet members of the FPLCC, a nonprofit organization that supports local libraries through fundraising, volunteerism and advocacy.

FPLCC members will be present to share why they are involved with the organization, how the group supports libraries across the county and how community members can get involved, whether they are interested in joining for the first time or reconnecting after past involvement.

“A healthy Friends group is crucial to the success of a public library,” Shelby Creekmore, assistant director of the Cullman County Public Library System, said. “In addition to raising funds, Friends members provide advocacy and volunteer support that helps strengthen library services and programs.”

In the past, the Friends have supported library initiatives by providing materials for programs, such as pumpkins for the annual pumpkin painting contest; organizing fundraising events, like the Storybook 5K, for the library’s capital campaign; and volunteering to lead programs and events. Creekmore said one of the most impactful roles of the FPLCC is advocating for the library within the community and helping educate the public about available services and ongoing needs.

Recently, the FPLCC has shifted its focus toward greater community outreach and advocacy. While fundraising remains part of the organization’s mission, new initiatives include managing Little Free Libraries, expanding volunteer opportunities and building community partnerships. To encourage participation and remove barriers to involvement, FPLCC membership fees have been waived.

“We want everyone to feel welcome and supported in joining the Friends. Even if someone doesn’t have extra funds to give, donating time and passion can make a meaningful difference,” said Creekmore.

The Meet and Greet is open to the public and will take place at the Cullman County Public Library on Thursday, Feb. 12, from 4-6 p.m. Organizers said they look forward to welcoming new and returning faces and sharing why the Friends love supporting local libraries.

The library is located at 200 Clark St. NE in Cullman. Find it online at www.facebook.com/cullmancountypubliclibrarysystem.
