CULLMAN, Ala. – The Hubert Richter Memorial Chapel (the “Tiny Church”) in downtown Cullman is currently undergoing renovations, with the goal of preserving the landmark’s historic charm while restoring it to its original condition.

Cullman Mayor’s Assistant Leanne West said the project includes identifying and repairing both interior and exterior issues, refinishing the chapel’s floors and benches, and repainting the building inside and out, along with other necessary improvements.

“These updates are being completed to preserve the character of the chapel and restore it to its original and intended condition,” West said.

City officials anticipate that renovations will be completed and the chapel reopened for reservations by early March, though the timeline is weather-dependent due to the nature of some of the work. West emphasized that the renovations will not change how the chapel is used or its role in the community.

The Hubert Richter Memorial Chapel will continue to remain unlocked and open to the public at all times, as originally intended.

“The chapel will continue serving as a quiet and welcoming place for prayer, reflection and personal moments of peace,” West said.

Those wishing to use the chapel for weddings, vow renewals or other organized services should contact the City of Cullman Mayor’s Office at 256-775-7102 or lwest@cullmanal.gov to reserve the space and coordinate scheduling.

West said preserving the chapel as an open and accessible space remains a priority for the City, noting that openness was central to its original purpose.  “Built in memory of Hubert Richter, the chapel was designed to remain unlocked and accessible at all times. Its openness reflects a spirit of generosity, inclusivity and community care, ensuring that people can find peace there without barriers, appointments or restrictions,” she said.

During the renovation period, the City is also encouraging the community to share their precious memories and photos of the chapel to highlight the many ways it has woven itself into Cullman residents’ lives over the years.

Said West, “From weddings and vow renewals to quiet moments of reflection, the chapel holds countless personal stories. This is an opportunity to reflect on its significance, celebrate those memories and recognize the deep connection our community has with this special place.”

The chapel is located at 419 First Ave. SE.
