PREP BASKETBALL: Cold Springs collects road sweep of Vinemont

VINEMONT, Ala.- It was senior night at Vinemont High School, where they hosted the Cold Springs Eagles in a county matchup on Tuesday night. Cold Springs would leave Vinemont with a pair of wins. In the varsity girls’ game, it was a tight contest through three periods, but Cold Springs dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Vinemont 14-4 en route to a 56-43 win over Vinemont. In the varsity boys’ game, Cold Springs held a double-digit lead early in the third quarter and held off some runs by Vinemont, and they would go on to knock off Vinemont 60-51.

Cold Springs 56 – Vinemont 43 (Varsity Girls)

Caroline Miller scored the first five points of the game for Vinemont, and gave them the early lead. Cold Springs countered with a run of their own, as Kaydance Williams hit a basket down low, Paizley Whitlow drilled a trey from the right wing, and Hollyn Bruer knocked down a pair of free throws to give them a 7-6 lead. Bruer and Ella Dickerson each drained a trey from the right corner to stretch Cold Springs’ lead to 13-8. A rebound and putback by Dickerson was later followed by a three by Kotie Calvert and put Cold Springs ahead 18-8. Vinemont, though, finished the quarter out strong. Arleigh Thomason put in a basket down low, then Miller and Thomason each hit a pair from the charity striple, and Reagan Robinson collected a steal and a layup to cut it to 18-15 going into the second period.

Dickerson’s basket down low made it 20-15 early in the second, but Addison Holcomb knocked down a basket in the paint, and Miller drained a trey to tie the game up at 20. Later in the quarter, Bruer buried a three from the right corner to give Cold Springs a 27-22 lead. Another three by Dickerson put Cold Springs ahead, 30-24. Robinson and Williams each added a late basket to make it a 32-27 game at the half.

Thomason drained a pair of threes to cut it to 35-33, and Robinson knocked down a long-range shot from the right wing to give Vinemont a 36-35 lead. Aleah Addison and Miller each traded threes, as Vinemont held a slim 39-38 lead. Late baskets by Dickerson and Williams gave Cold Springs the lead right back at 42-39 going into the final period.

Bruer knocked down a pair of free throws, then four straight points by Addison widened Cold Springs’ lead to 48-39. Robinson put in a floater to cut it to 48-41, but that’s as close as Vinemont would get the rest of the game. Dickerson scored six straight points, and Williams added a basket down low to make it a 56-41 game. Cold Springs is now 7-6 after their 56-43 win over Vinemont. 

Dickerson led the way for Cold Springs with 20 points. Bruer added 12 points. Williams ended up with eight points. Addison put in seven points, and Calvert collected six points. For Vinemont (9-5), Robinson finished with 16 points. Miller ended up with 12 points, and Thomason posted 10 points.

Cold Springs 60 – Vinemont 51 (Varsity Boys)

A floater by Ayden Black, plus four straight points by Breydon Hallmon, gave Cold Springs the early 6-0 lead. Vinemont went on a 6-0 run of their own, as a trey by Sam Marsh tied the game up at six. Cold Springs and Vinemont each traded 6-0 runs to keep the game tied at 12. Lindan Hill banked in a floater, and Cash Dickerson’s trey from the left wing gave Cold Springs a 17-12 lead going into the second period.

Dickerson drained a trey from the left wing, and Hill knocked down a short jumper to put Cold Springs ahead 22-14. Marsh buried a pair of treys to make it a 24-20 game, but Dickerson and Hallmon scored the final seven points of the first half for Cold Springs, as they would take a 31-20 lead into the locker room.

Cold Springs didn’t waste any time adding onto their lead to start out the second half. A pair of baskets by Hill and a free throw by Hallmon gave them a 36-20 lead. Marsh’s hot shooting kept Vinemont in the game, as he buried a trio of treys to cut it to 41-29. Gavin Parr drove to the basket and laid it up and in, then Bush knocked down a trey of his own to make it a 41-34 game late in the third. A rebound and putback by Hallmon put Cold Springs ahead, 43-34 going into the fourth quarter.

Parr’s trey cut it to 43-37, and later on that quarter, a rebound and putback by Bush made it a 47-41 game. Hill slammed it in off the inbounds pass to give Cold Springs a 50-43 lead, but Marsh’s eighth trey of the game trimmed the deficit to just four at 50-46 with 2:59 remaining in the contest. Black hit a pair of free throws, then Ethan Day added one of his own from the charity stripe to make it a 53-46 game. Day’s layup off of a steal stretched Cold Springs’ lead to 55-46, but Bush’s trey made it a six-point game. Black ended up hitting five of his final six free throws to put the finishing touches on a 60-51 win for Cold Springs.

Hill finished with 18 points for Cold Springs (10-1). Dickerson ended up with 14 points. Hallmon posted 12 points, and Black collected nine points. For Vinemont (9-5), Marsh led all scorers with a game-high 24 points. Parr added 10 points, and Bush ended up with nine points.

Cold Springs will travel to take on Winston County Thursday night, and Vinemont will go to Holly Pond on Friday night.
