HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Cullman High School Bearcat Swim Team turned in an impressive performance at the AHSAA State Swim Meet held this past weekend in Huntsville. Competing among 523 athletes from 76 schools across all divisions, CHS advanced to finals (top 16) in all but two of its qualifying events in the combined 6A/7A division.
The Bearcat boys’ team produced several standout efforts. The relay squad of Camp Smith, Magnus Mann, Mason Fuller and Briar Lackey advanced to finals in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, securing key points for Cullman. One of the highlights of the weekend came in the 400 freestyle relay, where Magnus Mann, Dallas Hammons, Briar Lackey and Camp Smith broke a 13-year-old school record during the finals to finish eighth overall.
The Cullman girls’ team also made a strong showing, sending both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay — featuring Mika Lackey, Tori Rees, Sofia Velez and Edie Hudson — to finals. Both teams posted season-best times while adding points to the Bearcats’ total.
Several Bearcats also competed individually. Camp Smith qualified in the 100 butterfly, Magnus Mann in the 50 freestyle, Edie Hudson in the 100 breaststroke, and Mika Lackey in both the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Mann, Hudson and Lackey advanced to finals, each producing season-best times in either preliminary or final rounds.
At the conclusion of the meet, the Cullman boys’ team placed 10th overall — third among 6A programs — while the girls’ team finished 22nd, ranking seventh among 6A schools.
“These results mark another successful season for our Bearcat swim program,” Coach Cory Goble said. “They highlight the individual growth of our athletes and the team depth that continues to move our program forward.”
