HANCEVILLE, Ala. – Vinemont made the short trip down Hwy 31 to Ray Talley Stadium in Hanceville for a regional battle with the Bulldogs Friday night and stops were hard to come by in this one. The Eagles led 35-21 at halftime but their offense was just getting started. Vinemont racked up 43 more points in the second half to put things out of reach for Hanceville and returned home with an eye-popping 78-42 win. Vinemont posted a new school record for most points in a single game in the win.
Early in the first quarter Hunter Black found Zavier Malcom for a 5-yard touchdown to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-0. Karson Arbet found Caleb Slain for a 42-yard touchdown to even the game at 7 with just under 9 minutes remaining in the opening quarter. After a three and out Vinemont’s Gabriel Herrera raced 34 yards to put the Eagles ahead 14-7 midway through the first quarter. Late in the opening quarter Herrera raced 75 yards to extend the Eagles led to 20-7.
Herrera pushed the lead to 28-7 early in the second quarter from 6 yards out. Hanceville cut into the lead when Nick Davis intercepted the pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-14. Vinemont quickly responded with a touchdown when Dalton Bryan punched it in from 3 yards out to put the Eagles ahead 35-14 with less than a minute remaining until halftime. As time expired in the first half Hunter Black found Javis Leusby for a 48-yard touchdown to send the game to halftime with Vinemont ahead 35-21.
Coming out of the locker room Vinemont quickly found the end zone when Gabriel Herrera raced 53 yards on the second play of the drive to put the Eagles up 42-21 with under a minute off the clock. Hanceville went for it on fourth down on their next possession but was unable to convert, 3 plays later Caleb Slain scored from 15 yards out to extend the Eagles lead to 49-14 with 8:45 remaining in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter, Hanceville’s Hunter Black found Nick Davis for a 52-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 49-28. Less than a minute later Vinemont answered on a 13-yard touchdown run by Chase Blair pushing the lead to 56-28. Hunter Black found Drake Bentley for a 22-yard touchdown, cutting the lead to 56-35 with 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Chase Blair pushed the lead to 63-35 on an 18-yard run late in the third quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter Zach Johnson scored from 15 yards out to put the Eagles up 71-35. With just under four minutes remaining in the game Hayden Puckett scored from a yard out to extend the Eagles’ lead to 78-35. The Bulldogs answered quickly when Hunter Black got the ball to Drake Bentley who raced down the sideline for a 63-yard touchdown cutting the lead to 78-42. Vinemont ran out the last two minutes of the game to wrap up the win and remain unbeaten in region play.
Vinemont (5-2) will hit the road next week for a region game at Gordo and Hanceville (0-6) will travel to play Midfield.
