HOLLY POND, Ala. – Holly Pond student Daniel Figueroa is in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to participate in Move United’s The Hartford Nationals, his first Adaptive Nationals meet.

Figueroa said he is competing Sunday and Monday, running the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

“I’ll be a senior at Holly Pond High School this year and will be running with the Lakeshore Foundation out (of) Birmingham,” Figueroa said. “They only sponsor one championship race so my family and I covered this trip. I’m hopefully doing another Nationals race this year, too. My goal with adaptive racing I’d say is to make a name for myself and for the Holly Pond community.”

Figueroa is known for his positive attitude and athleticism, as well as an adaptive athlete. He is a T44 (single, below the knee) amputee, an identifier he didn’t get to choose.

“My favorite thing about these types of meets would have to be the experience and these opportunities God has given me,” Figueroa said. “I’m traveling by myself until I meet up with Lakeshore in Michigan, so it’s been a fun experience.”

He said he is fully focused on indoor and outdoor track his senior year.

“I’ve met a couple of college coaches during my time up here, and it’s been a great push for the future,” Figueroa said.

His races will be on YouTube. Search “The Hartford Nationals.”
