CULLMAN, Ala. – Every story starts with a blank page. This November, the Cullman County Public Library is inviting local writers to fill one.
In honor of National Novel Writing Month, the library is hosting a short story writing challenge from Monday, Nov. 2, through Wednesday, Nov. 25. Entries should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words.
“Whether you’re new to writing or you have years of experience, all adults are welcome to try our writing challenge!” the library said in announcing the event.
Stories from writers of every age
The contest is open to participants of all ages, with entries judged in two categories: adults (18 and older) and kids (17 and under). That means young storytellers can try their hand at a tale of their own alongside seasoned writers.
Writers looking for a spark of inspiration can pick up writing prompts at the library, along with submission sheets.
Need help getting started? The library will also host a writing workshop for adults and students in grades 5 and up Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m., just days into the contest.
A month made for writers
National Novel Writing Month, often called NaNoWriMo, began in 1999 in the San Francisco area with just 21 participants. The idea was simple but daunting: write a 50,000-word novel during the 30 days of November, or about 1,667 words a day.
Over the years, the challenge grew into a worldwide tradition. While the nonprofit organization behind it shut down in 2025, writers, libraries and community groups have kept the November spirit alive with challenges of their own.
The library’s short story contest offers a more approachable version of the challenge. Instead of an entire novel, writers can focus on crafting one complete story, whether it’s their first or their fiftieth.
