CULLMAN, Ala. – Golfers gathered at Terri Pines Country Club on Monday, Sept. 21, for the Alabama Pest Control Association’s fifth annual Cauthen Classic, a tournament that raises money for the association’s scholarship fund.
The event is named for Butch Cauthen, a past secretary/treasurer of the APCA and past president of the Jefferson County Pest Control Association.
“Butch was in the industry and ran this association for a long time, so we wanted to honor him with a scholarship,” said Scott Burke. “So we’ve given out over $30,000 so far. So we’re excited to have another good year, another good turnout, and hoping we can keep raising money and doing a good job.”
Proceeds benefit the APCA Scholarship Fund, which provides financial help to the children of association members pursuing higher education. To be eligible, an applicant’s parent or guardian must be employed by a licensed pest control firm that has been an active or allied APCA member in good standing for at least three years. Applicants need a 927 SAT or 19 ACT score, must keep a 3.0 cumulative GPA and must be accepted as full-time undergraduates at an accredited college, university or technical college.
The association said scholarship amounts depend on available funds and are set by its scholarship committee. The next application period opens this fall. For details, visit www.alabamapca.com or call 205-823-6106.
