CULLMAN, Ala. – Once upon an evening dreary … or rather, an evening downtown, Cullman’s literary crowd will gather to celebrate one of America’s most haunting writers.

Jubilee Kitchen + Bar is teaming up with the Cullman County Public Library to host “An Evening with Poe” Monday, Nov. 2, at the restaurant, 515 Fourth St. SW. The night will celebrate the works of Edgar Allan Poe, the 19th-century master of mystery and the macabre.

The evening begins with a cocktail hour at 5 p.m., followed by readings at 6.

Nevermore will you hear these tales the same way

Guests can settle in for readings of four of Poe’s most famous works:

    • “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the story of a narrator driven mad by the beating of a heart beneath the floorboards
    • “The Raven,” Poe’s 1845 poem about a grieving man visited by a bird that speaks only one word: “Nevermore”
    • “The Black Cat,” a dark tale of guilt and a cat that refuses to be silenced
    • “The Cask of Amontillado,” a chilling story of revenge set in the catacombs during carnival season

Coming just after Halloween, the event offers one more chance to enjoy a spooky story, this time with a drink in hand.

    A historic setting

The event fits right at home in its setting. Jubilee is a locally owned restaurant and bar on the ground floor of the historic Flying Fifty Hotel in downtown Cullman. The sister company of Karma’s Coffee House, Jubilee describes itself as “a gathering place for friends, family, and neighbors,” serving brunch, dinner, artisan pizza, small plates, coffee, wine and cocktails.”

Jubilee is owned by Katie Fine, who launched Karma’s Coffee House in 2015, and its kitchen is led by Executive Chef Becky Watkins.

The partnership takes the Cullman County Public Library’s love of stories beyond the library’s walls and into one of downtown’s gathering spots.

    Plan to attend

Reservations are available online through Jubilee’s Toast reservation page, and seating is in the restaurant’s dining room. A credit card is required to reserve a seat. Guests who cancel within 48 hours of the event, or who simply fail to appear, will be charged $35 per person, so those planning to attend are encouraged to book with care. Guests must be 21 or older to enjoy the evening’s cocktails.

To reserve a seat, visit Jubilee’s website or Facebook page. For updates, follow Jubilee Kitchen and Bar and the Cullman County Public Library System on Facebook, visit jubileekitchenandbar.com or cullmanlib.org or call Jubilee at 256-735-4175.
