CULLMAN, Ala. – Pokémon cards were first launched in the mid-1990s and have recently regained traction by popular demand. In 2016 the release of the game Pokémon Go gave the franchise a new spotlight. In recent years, attempts at finding rare cards have brought new interest to card trading.

The Cullman County Public Library holds a quarterly trading event for players of all ages.

“We started the Pokémon trading event last year – I think it was the spring or summer – so this is the third or fourth time that we’ve held the event,” said Cullman County Public Library System Assistant Director Shelby Creekmore.

The events remain successful and there have been requests for the library to hold more in the future, though there are currently no plans.

“We invite visitors of all ages to come and participate. We encourage collectors to bring in their cards and trade if they would like or just to bring in for show. They can also play tournaments here,” Creekmore said.

The last event on Jan. 10 saw nearly 20 participants. The library also held a Pokémon scavenger hunt.

The next event will be held at the library in the summer. Nothing is decided as of this time, but have your cards ready!
